Every hide used is hand picked so that only those with the best body and snap, proper oil content and silky texture are selected. This top grain leather is tanned using two complimentary processes for an excellent end product. First, the hide is vegetable tanned for tightness and strength; then it is retanned using oil to give it softness, a great touch and just the right snap. These leathers are the most-desirable, best-looking and most expensive. As compared to other leather types, top grain leathers are stronger, wear better over time, and have a richer color. The natural animal hide markings in the grain is visible and these markings make each piece unique. The uppermost layer of the hide, top grain leather is the highest quality part of the hide and the mostly preferred for upholstery applications. Eight-way hand-tied springs have a wide range of movement providing a very even and individual "sit", because they move up and down and side to side. In the construction of these systems, the craftsman individually ties heavy gauge coils from front to back, side to side and diagonally (eight ways) to provide the highest level of quality, comfort and durability. It is universally accepted that the finest and most comfortable seat has a genuine 8-way hand-tied hourglass spring system. This is the only way to give independent seat suspension for every person, whatever their shape, size or weight. As each spring has to be individually tuned this craft requires a deft touch and a highly experienced eye. This process costs more because it is time consuming and can only be done by hand.
